Very few people have the opportunity to put up a proper Makiwara, or striking board on their wall at home. At least it’s the case if one want’s to be at peace with one’s neighbor, and still one would also need a concrete wall behind it so as not to destroy the wall itself, the lights etc.
In the video underneath I explain how I made my own, free standing and easy to move out of the way when not in use. You can easily substitute the “wooden man” structure that it’s attached to with a telephone pole or something similar. Also if you find it hard to get hold of a proper fundament for the pole; you can attach it from underneath the base oak board with long, solid bolts; just make sure you deepen the bolt heads so they don’t destroy your floor. Also you will need to add at least two inclined struts on the backside of it to keep it in place.
The pole itself has a diameter of 200 mm, and it’s 165 cm long. The oak base is 38 mm thick and is actually a part of a countertop. It’s 61 cm x 100 cm and cut at the corners. Make sure to fasten the pole towards the front end of the base, unless it will easily fall over.
How to use it
You don’t wanna disfigure or destroy your hands, so take care to build up the resilience of your hands gradually. Punching at full force will almost certainly lead to injury if you have not prepared yourself properly beforehand.
